I normally don’t give MLK day as a holiday for my employees (I have a small business and have to make some choices). But I am rethinking that this year, and am thinking of sending everyone home when they show up.
What would you think if your boss called for a paid holiday at the last minute? You wouldn’t get to sleep in, but you would not have to work.
[IDIOT BOSS UPDATE] Apparently, I told my office manager a while ago to include MLK day on our list of paid holidays, so no one is coming in anyway. I’m an idiot, but apparently an idiot who remembered to do the right thing and honor an important holiday. Ridicule welcomed in the comments.

I mean, it isn’t as good as knowing beforehand... but who wouldn’t like getting sent home w/ pay?

How far is their commute?
If I have to drive an hour to get to work to find out it’s closed, I’d be thankful but slightly annoyed.

I think it’s the equivalent of an adult snow day.

If they haven’t shown up yet, maybe call them?

Make them work but give them all time and a half.

I work 13 minutes from home now, and that would be sweet.
However, I used to work 55 minutes from home, and that would be shitty.

I would happily turn around and go to breakfast somewhere.

as long as it wasn’t deducted from their vacation days or other company holidays, i say go for it. maybe even call them in for a small company meeting to tell them your intent.
of course many of them would have preferred to know this prior so they could have slept in or gone on a short vacation or whatever, but hey go through your thought process. that will make it seem like you made an active decision and are not just shooting from the hip.

My Boss kinda did this today. He said answer emails, get anything urgent out of the way, then go home and enjoy your day. Everyone was pretty excited here.

If you’re a business owner, you probably already know that no matter what you do, some will find something wrong with it. If you feel able and want to give it off, let the ones who will enjoy it prevail, not the ones who wish to nitpick.
That being said, it might be a little different if you’re in the midwest where we’re having an ice storm. I’d think it’d be kind of crappy to have them drive in ice to get there then send them away.

I’d be warmed and happy with such. Though our off days typically follow the off days of K12 schools, so a skeleton crew would be needed to keep the ship sailing.

I’d be happy with that. I would be excatic if the boss took us all to breakfast first though. Then there’s a good reason for us all coming in first. ;)

I’ve never worked somewhere that gave MLK day off.

HA!
sometimes i do something similar... i’ll come across a document with some important and well thought out arguments, and i’ll ask a colleague, “who wrote this?” and they’ll say, “you did, dumbass.”
well done.

It’s a federal holiday. So he’d have to pay you holiday pay. So it is cheaper if you are paid not to work.

Never really seen a job like that here.
I only get holiday pay on Thanksgiving, Christmas day, new year’s day, and Easter. No other day is considered a holiday

I get up early to go the gym (not a humblebrag, my fat ass needs to go to the gym). Got up this morning, grabbed a suit like usual, hit the gym, got to work about 7:45 and wondered why the usual early morning crew wasn’t here. It hit me about 8:30.

New Years, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving , Christmas. That’s all I get as a union laborer. All paid double time if worked ( worked all but Christmas through the years)
Today the meter maids aren’t enforcing, so I get to park right outside the door.

I used to have a federal job for a number of years, and we had a lot of holidays off.

I’d be 55% annoyed (not upset, just annoyed) that I woke my ass up and got ready and made it all the way into the office then was told to go home (even if I was getting paid).
I’d be 45% excited to have a paid holiday off.
I’ve been on both sides of this situation.

Glad you were such a good boss without even realizing you were.
A note: if you consider giving your people a full, not-normal day off in the future, if it’s a day that their kids will also have off school, any parents with smaller kids would be very thankful to know beforehand (at least a day or two), so they don’t have to worry about figuring out childcare that day.
I also liked the other suggestions for a not quite full day off - take them all to breakfast, tell them to take care of anything that has to get done that morning and then head home.

I’m a bit puzzled by all this. Are public holidays in America optional or something?
Here holidays are governed by the Organisation of Working Time Act of 1997 which states that employees get, at the employer’s option:
A day off on the day or
A day off within 30 days or
A day’s pay
Offices invariably close on the day.
